With its fast-paced action and electrifying moments, basketball owes much of its smooth functioning to the unsung heroes on the court—the referees. That is why, as part of the BIG project, we are committed to delivering the best education for the referees, willing to participate in our events on and off the basketball court. We are happy to announce that Igor Djordjevic is the lecturer for the referees’ informative and educational seminar.
Early Years and Formation of Expertise
He began his career in 1998, stepping onto the court with a whistle in hand and a passion for the game. His journey was marked by a thirst for knowledge and a relentless pursuit of excellence. During the early years, he actively participated in referee camps, including the prestigious gatherings at Divljana and Kopaonik, organized by the Association of Referees of Region 7 KSS. These camps honed his skills and fostered camaraderie among fellow referees.
Table Referees Nomination and Championship Commissioner Roles
In the mid-2000s, Igor took on pivotal roles within the regional basketball community. As the Commissioner of University and School Championships in Niš, he ensured fair play and adherence to the rules. Simultaneously, he oversaw the proceedings at the Serbian School Olympiad held in Zaječar and Boljevac, leaving an indelible impression on young athletes. Our referee’s commitment extended beyond the court.
Educator and Mentor
From 2003 to 2009, he organized courses for aspiring referees, imparting wisdom gained through years of experience. His dedication to nurturing the next generation of officials contributed significantly to the growth of basketball in the region. Whether it was the intricacies of FIBA rules or the nuances of national competitions, he shared his knowledge generously.
European Women’s Championship and Beyond
The year 2019 brought new challenges and opportunities. As part of the organizing team for the European Women’s Championship in Nis, Igor played a crucial role in ensuring the event’s success. His attention to detail and ability to manage high-pressure situations garnered praise from players, coaches, and fans alike.
Wheelchair Basketball and Regional Leadership
From 2019 to 2023, our referee assumed the role of Chief Commissioner for the Balkan Wheelchair Basketball League (BWBL). His commitment to inclusivity and fairness shone through as he officiated games where determination and resilience took center stage.
As the Director of Regional Basketball (Men/Women) from 2020 to 2024, Igor steered the ship, ensuring the smooth functioning of leagues and tournaments. His leadership inspired collaboration and elevated the game to new heights.
Erasmus+ and Project BIG
In 2023, Igor’s passion for basketball extended beyond the court. He spearheaded the Basketball4all project, a joint effort with the NGO “AzBuKi”. This initiative aimed to promote basketball at the grassroots level, emphasizing inclusivity, skill development, and community engagement. Additionally, he opened an account on the Erasmus+ platform, fostering international cooperation and exchange.
And now, in 2024, our referee embarks on a new journey—the Project BIG. While details remain under wraps, we can be certain that his impact will reverberate throughout the basketball world.
